DescriptionA covered silver chalice with an interior gold wash. The cup is embossed with scenes of Chinese people carrying swords and banners and riding on horseback. There is varied architecture and landscapes in the background. An inscription on the chalice reads, "Presented to Captain P. Edwards of the Am. / Ship Hibernia in acknowledgement of his / kind and generous treatment of the Undersigned / late Master and Owner of the Danish Bark / Dannebrog lost in the Pacific Ocean. / by M. Simesen / Hong Kong March 1861." There is a row of fluting beneath the embossing. The chalice has a baluster stem with chased dome base. The slightly domed cover has a dragon head knob surrounded by an area of embossed decorative motif. Its maker, Hung Chong, was a leading and prolific jeweler in Canton & Shanghai. Given to Captain Pardon C. Edwards who was master of several whaleships out of New Bedford.The HIBERNIA was his final voyage.ProvenanceGiven to Captain Pardon C.
