DescriptionBlue wooden dovetailed box with runners on three sides for sliding cover. Spun brass bowl shaped compass with dry card suspended by two pins in outer brass gimbaled ring suspended from box by two screws. Graduated in geographic headings. The compass is gimbal mounted with fleur-de-lys north, decorated East and a glass cover. Inside white, engraved 32 point card marked "J. KEHEW NEW BEDFORD".ProvenanceJohn Kehew born in Amherst NH, moved to New Bedford and set up shop as dealer and maker of instruments. Advertised in New Bedford Mercury from 1839 to 1862 when he moved to Boston.
