DescriptionIn the 1950s, the Canadian government encouraged eastern Arctic Inuit communities to take up printmaking as an economic and creative outlet. Graphic art was historically rare in the region, but Inuit artists adapted to the new medium, which had similarities to carving. They pictured daily life, cultural stories, and events. Printmaking cooperatives like Cape Dorset and Pangnirtung in Nunavut continue the tradition today. This print, captioned : Holman A 1977 / Catch / Nanogak/Egutak followed by embossed symbol of the Holman printshop with the number 17 in the lower right-hand corner. Two Inuit peoples are ice fishing. One has just pulled a yellow fish from the hole in the ice. It was made at the Uluqsaqtuua (Holman Island) Printmaking collective in Ulukhaktok (formerly Holman), Northwest Territories, Canada. ProvenanceGift In memory of Adaline Havemeyer Perkins RandOn View
