DescriptionThis painting shows two figures, both shown in three-quarter view, leaning slightly towards each other. At left is a young girl, holding large book in her lap. Her right hand supports the book, while her left hand rests on a page while she is reading. Her dress is adorned with a large white collar, and a ribbon is tied in her hair. At the right is an older man, looking downward with his eyes closed and apparently listening. His left hand grasps a cane.
