DescriptionMiniature sleigh bed (doll's bedstead, scrimshaw). Carved, turned, and assembled from sperm whale skeletal bone, with the headboard and footboard undifferentiated; fastened with mortise joints, the rails inset with whale ivory pegs (bollards) (one missing; wooden replacement); sprung with braided cord; the ends polychrome engraved with a male bust portrait with crossed flags (USA stars-and-stripes and French tricolor) and a female bust portrait with draperies and leafy motif.Provenancemade at sea.On View
