DescriptionImage with two whaling ships (sails partially up). One is facing right, second is coming towards left foreground, from behind the first. The first ship has an American flag from taffrail, and is cutting-in part of a right whale. Part of the whale is being hoisted into the boat, while the rest sits in the water in front. A man stands on a platform off the side of the boat, to the left of the dead whale. Both ships have a swallowtailed flag at top. To the right on the horizon are two other ships and an island (?). Birds fly over the water near the dead whale. Title above, "2053 Right Whaling 'Hoisting in the Head with the Whalebone', New Bedford, Mass." View is strongly similar to Charles Sydney Raleigh's portrait of the ship YOUNG PHOENIX boarding a right whale's head (cf. 1918.27.2.9). This image is almost directly copied from a print by Benjamin Russell, see 2001.100.7605.ProvenancePurchased from Marine Antique Auctions, 2d quarter 1984, $3.21.
