DescriptionAllegorical Engraving. Christ steers a vessel (large ship, one sail) laden with his church and 6 personified virtues safely through a wave-tossed sea full of monstrous whales. An arch through the sky is in the right corner, with people grouped underneath (possibly heaven, safety). Modeled after an original by Jan van der Straet ('Nauita Erythraeum pauidus qui nauigat aquor', in 'Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium, Pugnae Bestiariorum' published by Philip Galle in Antwerp, 1578) (influenced by Collaert).
