DescriptionSperm whale tooth relief-carved in the southwest African manner with two tiers of human figures in procession around the tooth, the tip carved in the form of a bird. A traditional African format (customarily executed in elephant ivory) here adapted to a new medium using foundling teeth from stranbded carcasses and sperm whale teeth introduced by American whalemen working the Indian Ocean grounds and trading at African ports.On View
