DescriptionThis Arctic scene depicts a large iceberg highlighted in the center against a blue sky. On the left jagged ice forms appear against a distant horizon. In the background right, a high mountainous mainland is highlighted with patches of snow and ice while sloping down to iceburgs at water level and forming an inlet. An iced-in vessel is shown from the bow with a black hull and three masts drying top sails with clewed foresails and mizzen. Surrounding figures stand on the ice. The prow of a ship is barely visible off the stern just right of the large iceberg. In the middle ground right is a bark iced-in with sails furled on the starboard bow quarter. There are figures on deck and surrounding the bark on the ice. In the foreground are two patches of water and ice floes that break the expanse of solid ice and snow.
