DescriptionIn this painting of "The Gam" there are two ships meeting at sea. At the right, the bark SUNBEAM is seen from the port quarter "hove to" and lowering a boat to gam with the ship JAMES ARNOLD, seen "hove to" on the port tack, in the left background. There is a rolling deep blue ocean and blue sky with pink-white fleecy clouds.ProvenanceOriginally purchased from the artist by Alexander G. Grant for $800. It was inherited by his son, Christopher Grant, from whom it was purchased.Exhibited in the Show: "Whalers, Wharves, and Waterways" at the NB Whaling Museum (May 18 - July 9, 1973) and Brandywine River Museum (August 4 - Sptember 16, 1973).
